Georgia Vision Network
As our population ages worldwide but especially in the state of Georgia, more easily accessible vision care will be in high demand to those in rural areas. By 2050, it is estimated, there will be a 220% increase in vision impairment in persons aged over 40 in the state of Georgia. This is significantly higher than the anticipated 150% increase in the United States overall. These alarming increases disproportionally effect those Georgia residents who live in rural areas and those with significant barriers to care given their socioeconomic level. Barriers to care include, transportation, cost of care, and distance of available providers. The 2020 global Coronavirus pandemic has heightened these issues because of the direct impact to so many lives and livelihoods.
Vision care organizations such as Operation Sight, Lighthouse, Prevent Blindness Georgia, and Eye Care America have formed numerous collaborations to reach as many of those underserved Georgia populations as possible with vision screenings. However, while we have been able to make an impact in providing screenings to large numbers of residents, we noticed that follow up care became a significant barrier which needed attention. Thus, the Georgia Vision Network was born. The Georgia Vision Network aims to connect patients directly with their nearest available eye care provider through a telehealth database to ensure their vision care follow up needs are met.
